"Education and Participation of Girl Child"

On the occasion of National Voters Day and National Girl Child Week, (under Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Scheme) National Service Scheme (NSS) Units of the College in collaboration with Electoral Literacy Club and Department of Philosophy of Post Graduate Government College for Girls, Sector 11, Chandigarh organized a webinar on “Education and Participation of the Girl Child” on 25th January, 2021 at Google Meet platform in which resource persons Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, Assistant Professor and Head, Department of Defense and Strategic Studies and Dr. Monika Dara, Assistant Professor, Department of Public Administration of Post Graduate Government College, Sector 11, Chandigarh expressed their ideas. The resource persons informed the participants about the possibilities of achieving gender equality through addressing the existing discriminating practices and gender biases in our society and also dwelled on the concept of electoral democracy, constitutional and electoral rights and stressed that an educated girl child can participate better as informed citizen. Dr Monika Dara, who hails from the state of Haryana and has spent a considerable time conducting studies on women participation in local governance, in her presentation questioned gender inequalities, traditional patriarchal customs and other cultural norms which have neglected women dignity within the household as well as other public spheres. Dr. Sajeev Kumar and Dr. Monika Dara strongly affirmed that education is the only remedy and is inextricably linked to achieving gender equality/parity in the country. On the occasion an Inter College Essay Writing Competition on the topic “Education and Participation of the Girl Child” was also organized in which thirty three students from various colleges of Chandigarh, Punjab and Haryana sent their entries. In the Competition Ms Tanvi Chauhan of BA III, PGGCG-11, Chandigarh stood First, Sheereen Khan BA III, PGGCG-11, Chandigarh stood second and Ashima Gupta B.Com II, DAV College Sector 10, Chandigarh stood third. Principal, Professor (Dr.) Anita Kaushal appreciated the participation of students in the essay competition and the resource persons for their significant contribution in strengthening dialogue on gender equality, girl child education and electoral rights. All the faculty members and non-teaching staff also took National Voters’ Day Pledge.
